Do You Have What it Takes to Be a Bookie?

The stereotype of an old school bookie is one that's rough around the edges.  While these types of men still exist, today's bookie is often your typical nerd right out of college and, yes, there are plenty of female bookmakers making the rounds as well.  Let's explore.

The Nerd Bookie

Today's bookies must be savvy with computers and all that tech gobbledygook.  He or she needs will be guided by the very best a pay per head has to offer in this field.  For example, our friends at AcePerHead focus heavily on security attributes and server redundancy, something the old school bookie probably thinks means having a locked safe and making sure multiple people know the combination.

It's all about the bookie software.

From AcePerHead:

Security

"Make sure that the pay per head service you choose can guarantee the security of your data and your players’ data. Inquire about their security protocols and backups, as well as their privacy policies. AcePerHead.com will not take a signup from a subagent of an existing customer. We get those calls all the time, and the very first thing we do is contact the main agent. In a business partnership, undercutting our own customers is a losing strategy, and we don't care that we're the only PPH shop in the industry that values this kind of business trust."

Redundancy

"Make sure that the pay per head service you choose can guarantee the security of your data and your players’ data. Inquire about their security protocols and backups, as well as their privacy policies. AcePerHead.com will not take a signup from a subagent of an existing customer. There is also the importance of having everything adequately backed up.  This doesn't mean making sure it's all written on a legal pad.

Backing Up Data is Critical

"We backup all client data continuously, so even in the unlikely event of a catastrophic system failure, we won’t even miss a beat and all of your information will be safe. In addition to our highly redundant private-cloud infrastructure, we have backup hardware on hand so we can build a working system from scratch if needed."

That Statistician Bookie

To be perfectly frank, I don't even know what position Travis Kelce plays, nor do I care.  What's important is that he's healthy and playing well of late and - if he goes down - understand how much Kelce is worth on the line.  If you delve too deep into the weeds, odds are good it's going to come back and bite you in the ass come game time.

The best bookies have some stats skills, and you should too.

The Executive Bookie

Have some understanding of financing and how to run a business.  This means turning a profit.  The pay per head software solution will mostly do all the work for you but one must have an understanding of reports.

A standard goal is to keep 5% to 10% of the actual bets that are coming in.

Know that If you’re taking in a few thousand dollars per week in transactions, you can easily realize a ‘hypothetical’ profit in the low six figures per year.  That's your common sense goal but, the bigger you get and the better understanding of your player base, these numbers can easily increase.

Just Be You

Know your players.  These should be through referrals and make sure these individuals have the ability to pay when dealing with a rough streak.

Don't show off by trying to accommodate someone just because they drive a fancy car.  It's probably rented like most of the Lamborghinis you see here in South Beach.

Have trust in the folks who do it right, those overseeing the pay per head.  AcePerHead has been doing this for decades now.  Let them show you the way.  They ever offer a trial run of the software.
